The Captain John Collins Chapter was honored to take part in the Patriot Grave Marking Ceremony on March 2, 2025, to recognize the service of Patriot John Armstrong (P-104517) at Armstrong Cemetery in Charleston, Clark County, Indiana. This special event commemorated Armstrong’s dedication as a private in the Continental Army in 1776, where he served with the 12th and later the 3rd Pennsylvania Regiments, eventually earning the rank of brevet captain by the war’s end. After the Revolution, he played a significant role in securing the frontier of the Northwest Territory, later serving as a judge and treasurer of the territory. His contributions extended beyond military service, as he founded Bethlehem, Indiana, and became an influential figure in early American history before passing away on February 4, 1816.
Members of the Captain John Collins Chapter were proud to stand alongside fellow compatriots from SAR, DAR, and other lineage organizations in honoring this distinguished patriot. The ceremony included a color guard presentation, a patriot biography, the unveiling of the SAR marker, and floral tributes. Distinguished guests such as Dr. Daryl Addington, President General of National SAR, were in attendance. This meaningful tribute reflected the ongoing mission of the Captain John Collins Chapter and SAR to preserve the memory of those who fought for American independence, ensuring that their sacrifices are never forgotten.
