City of Acworth Proclamation – April 17, 2026

The City of Acworth honored the legacy of the American Revolution on April 16, 2026, by issuing an official Patriots Day Proclamation recognizing April 19, 2026, as Patriots Day. Compatriots Earl Cagle, Wayne Brown, Jim Poole, and Chris Thompson were present to receive the proclamation on behalf of the Captain John Collins Chapter, Georgia Society Sons of the American Revolution, underscoring the chapter’s close connection to the community it serves.

Reading from the proclamation, Mayor Thomas W. Allegood recalled the events of April 19, 1775, when British regulars marched on Lexington and Concord and the “shot heard round the world” marked the beginning of the struggle for American independence. The document further highlighted Georgia’s own Revolutionary War history, including the April 19, 1778 naval action on the Frederica River under Colonel Samuel Elbert, whose victory helped delay the British invasion of Georgia and boost patriot morale. The proclamation emphasized that Patriots Day serves to remind citizens of the sacrifices made by patriots such as Captain John Collins and to encourage all residents to learn more about the Revolution’s role in establishing the United States.

In its closing language, the proclamation called on Acworth’s citizens to observe April 19 each year as Patriots Day in commemoration of the American Revolution and the long struggle for independence. For our Chapter, it was a privilege to stand with city leaders as they publicly recognized both the patriots of the 18th century and the descendants who work today to preserve their memory and share their stories with the next generation.
