The Captain John Collins Chapter of the Georgia Society, Sons of the American Revolution, gathered for its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at Hudson Grille in Kennesaw, where members and guests enjoyed fellowship, an engaging historical program, and important updates on Chapter activities.
Evening Program – Dr. Tom Price on Physician Signers
Vice President Jason Shepherd warmly introduced the evening’s guest speaker, Dr. Thomas E. “Tom” Price. Dr. Price, an orthopedic surgeon and former 23rd Secretary of Health and Human Services, shared a lively and informative program on “Physician Signers of the Declaration of Independence,” highlighting the medical professionals among the Founders and their contributions to the cause of American independence. Drawing on his experience as a physician, member of the U.S. House of Representatives, and Georgia State Senator, Dr. Price connected the legacy of these patriot physicians to the ongoing responsibilities of civic leadership, public service, and care for our communities.
At the conclusion of his presentation, President James E. Poole and Vice President Shepherd presented Dr. Price with a Certificate of Appreciation from the Chapter, thanking him for sharing his time, expertise, and perspective with our members.
Awards and Recognitions
The Chapter was pleased to recognize Sheri Thompson of the Captain John Collins Ladies Auxiliary with the America 250 Bronze Medal. This award reflects her dedicated support of the Chapter’s America 250 initiatives and her continuing efforts to promote the remembrance of our patriot ancestors as the nation approaches the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution.
Veterans Committee Report
Veterans Committee Chair Gary Hoyt encouraged members to contact their Members of Congress in support of naming the new VA Center. He emphasized how personal outreach from engaged citizens can help ensure our veterans receive the recognition and support they deserve, and he invited Chapter members to continue looking for meaningful ways to serve veterans and their families in our local community.
New Business – Looking Ahead to Constitution Day
Looking ahead, the Chapter discussed plans for participation in the Acworth Constitution Day Parade, scheduled for Saturday, September 12th. Chris Thompson outlined initial ideas and encouraged compatriots to begin planning for their involvement, with a focus on showcasing Revolutionary War-era color, sharing the SAR story with the public, and using the event as a friendly opportunity to connect with prospective members and community partners.
